It's mostly the fault of DoorDash / Uber Eats. They should just charge appropriately for the distance, volume of food to carry, and the time of day. Defaulting a tip to 20% of the order total, after having two fee line items "Delivery Fee" and "Taxes & Fees" amounting to like 30% on top of the order, where the cost of the food is already marked up because the restaurant pays a fee to them too....it's just not conducive a fair outcome for the drivers, or even the customers really. Everybody gets a little ripped off except DoorDash/Uber. When I use DD/UE I ignore the suggested tip and just go by the distance and time of day and what feels appropriate for those, defaulting to a percentage of the order makes no sense.

This is true. They try to justify it by claiming drivers are “independent contractors” for the customer and the app just facilitates it. I’d say fault lies not only with the company but also the system that allows it to happen
