This is why I hated it when right-wing antivaxxers and conspiracy theorists began popping up during the COVID pandemic and talking about how we shouldn't be working ourselves up over a disease that "had a 99% survival rate." Assuming that number was correct (spoiler alert: it wasn't), if 200 million Americans were infected by the disease, that would mean 2 million American deaths.

Not to mention the damage it was doing to healthcare systems. People were dying of other diseases because they couldn’t go to hospital in time, or were scared to go, to get other needed treatments
