It isn't that complicated. If you want an example of how you can improve the layout, just look at "new.reddit.com." Literally everything about it was better. It had impeccable spacing between threads on the main page and in subs, the balance between bolded text and text size was very well done. It was streamlined but also contained a lot of information. It is not that easy to pull this off (obviously) but the old design did that.
This layout feels completely off balance with way too much space, and things are not emphasized as well as the old version. Just literally look at every detail on the old version and try to understand why it was so well done.
I just want to add, I am not opposed to change, I liked the change from old to new reddit because it was well-designed. This simply is not as well designed as new.reddit does, both from an aesthetic and functional perspective. There are so many things that are worse that I just say "look at the old way" but I'm not trying to be dismissive or to say I hate change, I just think that layout was very well done.
