Hello! It's December 12, so do the Twelve Days of Christmas start today or tomorrow? Does Christmas count as a day of Christmas? I don't really know. I just know a lot of birds are involved. Let's see what was involved in r/help last week, shall we?
Previously, when we announced the sunsetting of new.reddit[1], it was possible to continue using that UI if you were a moderator. About a week ago, we announced in r/modnews[2] that new.reddit would be going away on December 11, 2024. As of yesterday, December 11, new.reddit.com no longer works for users, including moderators. There will be no changes to old.reddit.com and you are still able to use it.

I know change is hard! And I am happy to share constructive feedback about the new UI with the correct teams. Feel free to leave comments about this change in this post. I'll pass stuff along that can help the teams improve the experience for you.
2FA adds an extra layer of security to your Reddit account. You can learn more about 2fa in this Help Center article[4].
So if you're switching phones, plan ahead!
Getting a new phone for the holidays? Don’t forget to disable 2FA on your old device first and re-enable it on your new one. Skipping this step could lock you out of your account.
Best Practices for Keeping Your Account Safe
When setting up 2FA, you’ll receive backup codes. Store them in a secure location (not on your phone). You can access codes anytime in your account settings as long as you're in your account.
If you’re not sure which authenticator app to use, we’d suggest 2FAS[5] or Google Authenticator for standalone apps. Or you can use password managers with built-in 2fa management likeBitwarden[6] or 1Password[7].
Connecting your Reddit account to Google or Apple SSO provides additional login options which can help you regain access if your 2FA fails.
Over the past 7 days, r/help had 1,826 posts, which is 178 more posts and a 10.8% increase from the 1,648 posts in the previous 7 days. And there were 5,282 comments which is up 530 comments for an 11.1% increase from the 4,752 comments the previous seven days. 2,000 new users subscribed to r/help last week (up a mere 16 users from the previous week) and there were over 1.4 million views, which is up by 91.6k from the 1.3 million last week! Busy week!
Yes, this is in regard to new.reddit no longer being supported. You can check out this post[9] in r/modnews for some more information. You can also read my little blurb above.

Lots of people chimed in on this one to say that they were experiencing the same thing with giant text. u/jgoja suggested[11] posting over in r/bugs since it is a bug. And over in r/bugs was this post[12] where u/CorrectScale took time out of their cake day celebrations to reply to[13]. And the good news is that a fix is on the way!

Seems like a good time to mention that if you're experiencing something not working properly that r/bugs may be a better place to start rather than r/help. But even if you do start here, our helpers will help you!
If you have home feed recommendations turned on, you'll get recommendations for subreddits in your home feed. There are a few things you can do here. u/jgoja explained how to turn off home feed recommendations[15]. u/Tragic_Consequences suggested clicking on "Don't show me this"[16] and move on. That way, you still get home feed recommendations, but just not like that. And u/briancs159 explained how to mute a subreddit[17]. The trifecta of answers!

i genuinely hate that I'm being forced to use the new UI. I don't ever write posts like this, but this is something that irks me so bad that I just feel like I have to voice my concern somehow or somewhere. I never liked the UI change, since it came out ages ago & now that it's no longer possible to use the 2nd gen UI by using third party extensions / quirks in the site, I really don't see myself spending any more time on this site.
I just don't understand how you have a multitude of people complaining and voicing their dislike in the UI for almost a year now, and choose to not only ignore them, but make it so that they can no longer choose how to view the site in their preferred way?? imo the 2nd gen UI was the perfect UI in terms of how it looked & functioned. during the old UI, I would use reddit on pc more compared to my phone just because of how satisfying it was in general.
I don't see any legitimate reasons why you would downgrade into the mobile-esque thing that wastes SOOOOO much space for literally zero reason other than cutting costs and laziness. i forced myself to use and like old.reddit the other day, since there's literally zero chance the devs ever remove that and it still looks miles better than the current UI.
there's a slim chance the UI gets reverted, but at least make it so third parties are able to do so again. or change it so the user can choose what layout they want.

How come it seems like all the bugs of the new UI never seem to get fixed? Is someone reading the r/bugs Reddit? Is there a link to bugs being worked on?
We are forced now to use the new UI yet every subreddit I open lists HOT and not NEW like what my preferences show. I brought this issue up here 3 months ago and I have also reported it in r/bugs at least 4 times in the last year and yet my default sort of NEW still doesn't work. It gets tiresome to change it to new when you belong to multiple subreddits.
I also brought up that the last UI once a post has been read it turns a light shade of grey, now the change is barely noticeable so it is hard to tell if I have previously opened it. Not such a big deal on smaller subreddits but it is nice on ones with lots of posts, if one checks them out in the morning and then again in the evening it is nice to see when I hit a read post when there is a lot of them.
It gets frustrating that the developers have been working on this UI for how long, no one wants or likes it yet it is pushed on us without any given reason why! This format may work on the app version but it is really bad or not user friendly on a browser. Makes no sense to get rid of a UI that everyone likes and want but yet you keep old.reddit going that looks like a kindergartner developed back in the 90's. Go figure!

Why is there a large blank space taking up the right hand side of the screen? Why is the information I want to read squished into an area one third the width of the screen?

Change is not hard. Change to a massively inferior option is the hard part. New.Reddit was the perfect almagamation of Old.Reddit and newer looks. This latest UI is clearly designed for mobile and it doesn't translate to Desktop.
It's been riddled with issues that have been brought up time and time again, for months, and still are not addressed. Yet developers still push it. Forcing an unfinished product to consumers that have never asked for this. How can you get rid of a sleeker and modern UI (and generally liked and praised) but still maintain a 90's look version of it still baffles me.
I will never get behind the "It's very difficult to maintain 2 versions of a different site for people". You are doing it now, but you're choosing wrong. I do not believe it's hard to offer a toggle for the users and let them pick the best experience they want for themselves.
All of these mod post about "leave you comments about this new UI so we can direct them to the appropiate channels/teams" feel overly dismissive and aloof. It's been months of hundreds of people telling you what is wrong with the new UI, everytime a mod asks, but still the issues stand.
Don't push an UI that has been not tested, it's unfinished, riddled with Known issues for months & it actually not liked by the majority of Users. Recognized that you tried, **but failed.** Scrap this idea and give us New.Reddit Back.

This will be lengthy, my apologies, but I wanted to cover everything.
In the long run, my immediate needs with regard to this (horrible) new UI are as follows:
1. The text size (of normal comments and the body of posts) is too small and needs to be restored to the same size it was in new.reddit.com. This change needs to happen immediately and needs to be prioritized before any other changes except those relating to Reddit crashing. I have pretty good eyesight, and the text is smaller than any other website I'm on and print magazines as well.
2. I cannot sort posts by flair, that capability has not been implemented in this UI.
I previously mentioned both of these, and there has been no action. If you cannot get in touch with the developer team, or you do not have sway with them, I need to know how to get in touch with them myself. Enough is enough. I'm sorry to be harsh, but I've been very patient.
In addition, I was very put off by the tone of the admin who wrote last week's post in r/modnews and a follow up comment yesterday. He spoke about the deprecation almost with glee. He was also very transparent about this new UI being a work in progress. That is unacceptable. Normal practice in IT is to make sure all the bugs have been worked out and all functionality is complete before discontinuing the previous version. That obviously hasn't happened with Reddit. I, and others, need (this is no longer just a want) new.reddit.com to be restored until this new UI is completely finished and extensively tested with the user base that doesn't care. That means, for at least the next 12 months, and probably longer. That admin mentioned this being the culmination of a year of hard work, and this UI is nowhere near ready for prime time.
The last time I wrote, you told me that you passed my feedback to the correct team. That hasn't gotten me anywhere. I either need you to actively follow up with the developer team, or tell me how to get in touch with them myself. Thank you.

The biggest issue is the insane amount of wasted space. Look at this.[1] Why is half the website empty space? I understand the principals of mobile-first web design, but that does not mean 'ignore desktop design and force everything into looking like mobile'. I am not scrolling on my phone, I am sitting down at a 16:9 monitor, and half of my screen is blank.
1: https://i.imgur.com/NmfKdAA.png
It's not like the comments section is the only issue either. Here's the front page right now, when I'm not signed in and have no addons enabled.[2] In fact, looking at it now, the main page is even WORSE. Less than a third of the screen is the actual content I want to see, and over half of it is literal blank space. No, not useless space or wasted space, it is literally BLANK, with ZERO content. The rest of it is a side bar I can't hide, suggested posts I can't hide, and popular communities that I can't hide.
2: https://i.imgur.com/G5HhVCK.png
Also, pinned posts just don't work. They aren't pinned at the top subreddits. I can see an icon on a pinned post showing its meant to be pinned, but they're just interspersed in the feed like any regular post.

The new UI is awful. It looks almost high-constrast in some ways, but then there's no contrast in other areas. The dark mode looks amoled or something, causing the text to appear way to bright. Also, nothing pops that should. The side bars and also posts just blend into the backgroumd. The entire screen is filled with useless stuff. Also, everything is way too round. It almost looks like a blow up mobile app bc of this. Why not just keep new.reddit.com[1] around at this point? What's the point of the new UI at all even? I can't think of even one advantage.

My biggest gripes are the sidebar not remembering certain areas being collapsed. I want the communities up top as those are the most important part of reddit. The center of the screen is way too narrow at 1440p. The posts are way too big and I would like an option to not have videos and images open by default. I would only like to see them when I click on the post. Collapsing threads is also cumbersome as I can only collapse on the parent comment, so if scrolled down you have to scroll back up.

Also old reddit which just got unrightfully deleted worked with hover zoom apps, this one doesn't and really affect the browsing experience, are they going to do something about that.

Many of my issues with the 'new, new' UI have been covered, but one other issue I have is there is no longer the ability to 'follow' a post. Under new.reddit, you could click an icon to follow a post and be notified of new replies. That was very helpful, especially in more tech-heavy threads. Is that gone forever, or is it something that will come back 'someday'?

Not really sure why new.reddit was killed off, but old.reddit is still in place. Seems like a weird decision.
Honestly, as a desktop experience, the current Reddit really doesn't feel that great. The main things I'd like to point out:
- The left sidebar takes up too much space. The site design is responsive and automatically hides it into a drop-down box if your browser is in a small enough window[1]. It would be good if we could get an option to set the site to look like that all the time via user settings.
- If not the above, an option to collapse the sidebar down to just the icons would be a good compromise.
- The main page of a subreddit seems to fill out the remaining space on the right of the sidebar, but once you enter a post, that is not the case. There seems to be a maximum width for posts which results in a lot of blank/wasted space.
- The above is made more obvious because the default action for opening a post on current Reddit is different, right? On new.reddit, it would open in a sort of popup, but now you're just forcibly directed to a dedicated page. This new method honestly makes Reddit feel slow/cumbersome. I do appreciate that we can chose to open posts in a new tab, so thank you for that, but I'd still prefer the new.reddit method.
Hopefully the design team does take the *constructive* feedback from all these comments on board, because there does seem to be a bit of pushback with this decision.

I have been really trying to get used to this New UI, but it's just been so problematic for me. Here are the issues I'm experiencing:
My specs are as follows, if this is useful information:
Desktop version | Surface Pro5 tablet/laptop | Windows 10 | Firefox browser.
Also, I prefer the "Card View", and I use Light Mode (do not care for dark mode).

Why won't you answer the question of why all of the feedback you were allegedly collecting about this version of the UI went completely ignored like everyone said it would when you tried to collect feedback for a globally available platform via a google form?
Here's (one of) the time's that I've asked this
It just seems really pointless to actually provide any feedback, especially when that means I have to take my time to be cordial and write out paragraphs of information and collect data on what browser I'm using and what OS i'm using, etc., when you're just evidently going to ignore this feedback wholesale.

Hi u/TheOpusCroakus and thank you for taking feedback.
One of the missing features from new.reddit is the popup that tells you the upvote / downvote ratio of a post, when you open it and hover over the vote count.
It was very useful, because whether a post gets 49 upvotes and 51 downvotes, or 0 and 100, it just shows "0 points". The upvote ratio was the only way to distinguish controversial or maliciously downvoted posts (around 30 to 50 % upvotes) that may be worth my attention, from spam or very low quality posts (usually under 10 %).
Is there any chance to get this feature back, or is there any other way to display the upvote ratio (or up/down vote counts)? Thanks!
