Am also seeking an answer to this question. I bought an m.2 stick and used it in my laptop prior to building my pc. M.2 drive is currently not being detected in the bios.

Does it need to be formatted prior to it being installed?

Can I only format it on my laptop?

If its not detected in your BIOS you should check the Mainboard manual or google how to enable the m.2 drive in Bios. It should be something like RAID settings. Depending on the mainboard manufacturer.

When its recognized in BIOS you can format it while installing Windows. You can even format the m.2 if encryption like bitlocker is enabled.
