I grew up in Houston, was known as an atheist throughout high school at a private religious school, was well-liked and never bothered about it.

Cities in Texas are great, rural Texas is different but still not actually that bad. I go to college in New York and have encountered way more vocal religious/conservative dummies than I ever had to spend time around in Texas.

Upstate NY or the NYC area? Cuz, yeah, most of upstate is as rural as it gets with a few little pockets of sanity like Ithaca.

It's really all about exposure to new ideas and different sorts of people. Cities are great for that. It's harder to be hateful and afraid of something you can hang a name and a face on.
