Bullies love to claim "it's just a joke", but if not everyone is laughing, it's bullying.
And even if he does have a dark sense of humor, it's not like that's an innate trait he has no control over. Why is telling "jokes" no one is laughing at more important to him than be nice to his daughter and wife?

People claim that being cruel is the same thing as a dark sense of humor, and it’s just not true. Dark jokes still need to be jokes, humor needs to be intended. Mean people like to claim they have a dark sense of humor when they really just enjoy saying mean stuff and want to hide behind it.
Saying “my daughter is ugly because of her leg braces” is not dark humor, it’s simply saying a cruel thing and laughing. Hanging Christmas ornaments on the braces is dark humor. Saying you’d never rob a bank with her because her braces make her steps loud is dark humor. There needs to be an attempt at humor, not just a mean statement.

Even if it was meant to be "just a joke" his refusal to accept that what he said was damaging/hurtful and inability to apologize is very telling. We all cross lines sometimes that we don't intend to, but the solution is definitely not to deflect or attack when someone says something was too far.
