I absolutely can NOT understand why a devout Catholic would be willing to help the church navigate a scandal.

Navigating a scandal does not necessarily mean covering it up. No matter what, the church was going to have to decide what information to release and how and what to communicate to the media and public. If Benson and company were simply providing advice on the communication strategy and advocating full transparency, I would be okay with that and understand why someone who is Catholic would do so. While I don't personally care for organized religion, I accept that many people find it to be an important, meaningful part of their life and I think it is possible for someone to condemn bad acts while still maintaining their faith. That said, that is not what appears to have happened here and I think Benson and company were complicit in attempting to down play the extent of the abuse.

I grew up in a devout Catholic house and went to Catholic school for 14 years. We were taught that the nuns and priests were not to be questioned. I think that these people are so devoted to their religion that they rationalize their despicable actions and the coverup because they believe they are adhering to their duty to protect the church. There is some serious cognitive dissonance and cult mentality going on here. Note that I am trying to explain their behavior. I am not trying to defend it. I find it absolutely sickening. The fact that they covered up so much and continue to lie when the evidence is in writing is just insane to me. I’m shocked that the NFL is not going to investigate this, am I am sure that is because they don’t want any negative publicity in the Super Bowl host city. I really hope this story breaks nationally and there is public outcry.
