Is it only me or do you also think that Lagrange Android needs a little bit of acceleration when you scroll up & down?
@skyjake
Hi Geminauts, I am planning to shutdown gnuser.land pretty soon.
There are two main reasons: I'll move to another domain and I'll host a couple of friends involved in the Gemini ecosystem as well; and because my VPS will drop the support for FreeBSD in a couple of month.
I am almost convinced to move the new capsule on OpenBSD.Amsterdam, this allows me to contribute back too!
(GNU)/Linux and myself are like separated at home and I barely afford its stink, I'd like to avoid any possible interaction with it. 🤢
I'll keep you posted... 😉
ASCII-ART Generator???
Apparently FreeBSD has only tools to convert ASCII into Bitmap, I am looking for the opposite?
Do you have any recommendation?
Thanks!
Eventually I upgraded RAM (2G) and disk (128G ssd) of this very old Acer Aspire One Netbook that I am trying to convert in my Gemini dedicated mini-workstation.
I put on it OpenBSD as OS and Window Maker ad Windows Manager; my main tool will be xterm, tmux, rclone, aerc mail...
GUI apps will be Sylpheed, Lagrange, Gpicview, mupdf...
To browse internet there aren't real solutions, this netbook simply can't run any modern webpage, besides using any Gemini Client + DucklingProxy an alternative might be Brosh + Firefox as backend.
I hope with this mini station to deliver faster and often more articles... 🙏
I wonder if the people out there will ever realize that, after billion and billion of whatever bank currency, there is not a website and a browser that on a mobile renders the text so gorgeously as Lagrange. 🤔
🤷♂️
Asciidoc to GemText
Does anyone know if any dude has, by any chance, created a tool to convert documents from "AsciiDoc" to "GemText" ?
Thanks!
@marmaladefoo I'd like to convert some html documentation in GemText, I am not a coder though and I was thinking perhaps I may use Duckling-proxy to do the heavy part.
If this would be feasable would you share with me further tips to automize a bit the process?
Thanks,
G.
Today I have just discovered another Gemini 💎
This is something I have been thinking a lot but never have found time to dedicate to.
A super cool dude is bringing "public domain" books into the Gemini Space and he/she is making them available for all!
I have to say the result is astonishing on Lagrange Android!
The GemText has, again, demonstrated very well how much is suitable for a minimal but yet elegant typesetting composition!
Please enjoy "The Locrian Zone Library" :
gemini://gemini.locrian.zone/library/index.gmi
dear @skyjake Lagrange on Android is very addictive... I have a request or suggestion (it depends by your mood) to improve the UI.
My thumbs would be really happy if you can compact/move the:
URL Bar
the tabs
the toolbar
At the bottom, actually the toolbar is already there...
Also I like the tabs the way they are, however modern mobile browsers show tab as preview or something like that, this wouldn't make sense with Gemini since everything look the same.
Not sure if you can do that but maybe when the tabs bar is too crowd you may simply slide left or right or click a dropdown button and show off all the tabs. However I prefer the first solution.
Thanks!
Did anyone already create a program that convert (html) rss feed in GemText so you can read them in your favorite Gemini client? 🤷
I recently bought a Kinlde copy of "Mastery Httpd and Relayd" by MWL and while reading an e-book is, despite the medium, a pleasent experience, this book is really poorly formatted, at least based on my parameters.
This book would be perfectly readable in a GemText format with lesser weird formatting issues, all this preamble has driven to my following questions:
Does it exist a Gemini Client design to work on a E-Ink screen? Are you aware about any related project?
Thanks! 💜
@skyjake I love Lagrange, personally is one of the elements that makes Gemini so special however there is one aspect that really drives me crazy!
There is this blocking behavior that when your are typing something you can't leave that page, you can't do anything else than just replying.
For the desktop version you may open a second view however when you type something the focus goes on the active window so it does not really solve this issue.
It would be fantastic if typing would belong exclusively to the parent's tab letting the user to freely browsing across all the others tabs.
Can you do anything to improve that behavior
Amazing article by Drew De Vault...
I really endorse him!
gemini://drewdevault.com/2022/03/01/Open-source-is-defined-by-the-OSD.gmi
Again over the issue about:
gemini.circumlunar.space
The mailing list is over the "official" web page is down.
This is not a good service for Gemini, people are concerning about "external" attack but the problem are coming internally.
Today I was unable to provide the official documentation, I opted for "geminiquickst.art" but also this page is linked to circumlunar.
This situation must be fixed urgently who knows the people involved should try to contact them.
The current state cannot continue anymore!
Unless "we" elect another domain as official documentation and accordingly we change all our references to circumlunare.
Smol web
Is an awful and ugly definition, can we stop using it? 🙏

@skyjake did you plan to add a spellchecking function, in the near future, to Lagrange (all versions) ?

Hi Geminauts,
I have just updated this short guide for FreeBSD, Jails and Telescope!
gemini://gnuser.land/gemlog/2021-11-19-telescope-on-freebsd-jail.gmi
The brand new shit from Gugl...
An improved tag system, server side, able to leak your data bypassing the browser.
Gemini can sanitize the WWW if machine learning can enhance software like "DucklingProxy".
All the folks with knowledge to do that should really take this seriously.
The article is very detailed:
https://chromium.woolyss.com/f/HTML-Google-Tag-Manager-the-new-anti-adblock-weapon.html
I dream an Email Client that adheres to the Gemini Philosophy: less is more; and that renderizes email in GemText and uses ducklingProxy to translate html emails... 😌
Ok this is just a pure curiosity...
But how much would be safe doing Online Banking on Gemini?
Just forget about authentication and let us pretend that we use a super protect method...
Thanks 😁
There is not way I can have my Capsule indexed into medusae.space... 😭😭😭

Hi folks, do you know how to edit bookmarks in Lagrange 4 Android?
Eventually I fully joined the Lagrange for Android wagon; importing the ceritifcats had been a bit clumsy tough.
Ariane has been great but Lagrange is on a total different level.
🍺
Hi guys which kind of certifcates should I use on Deedum? Mine ends in ".pem" but it says "bad" for both!
Thanks! 👍👍👍
Our dear #stack or #stacksmith just dropped a bombshell about Gemini and TLS. He is very detailed about his points hence I would take it seriously. However, even though I am the least expert, I still see some advantages using TLS rather plain communication.
-Client like Lagrange makes create an identity (if identity is equal to a certificate) a breeze.
-If the communication is plain and clear, stealing an identity even using "digital signatures" or PGP would be easier.
-PGP doesn't seem more intuitive than TLS Certificates.
-With TLS and CA you can create a restricted access even in Gemini.
By the way having encryption is fine.

Hi Geminauts, I apology to all of you since I messed up with Antenna while trying to fix the gemlog.script...
😭😭😭
Yesterday night I refreshed a bit my homepage and my goodies page... 🪣🧹

Apparently it does exist! 😁

@skyjake have you ever considered to add an additional optional behavior for the "block" type line (```)? So far click (or double click) expand and collapse the block, but it would be cool if you can change the behavior in just copy.
Thanks,
tgl
@lykso I beg pardon for my behavior, but you once was so kind to prepare me a modified gemlog.sh script suitable for FreeBSD.
The link expired because it took me too much time to test it out. Would you still be so kind to share that script with me?
🙏
I finally got my two WD Red Plus 6TB, I need only the SD, which is going to arrive soon, and I can finally make operative the Odroid-HC4 that has been collecting dust for almost an year...😩
It could be possible create a something similar to a classic forum with the Gemini technology?
I miss such experience in the Gemini space, although maybe the Tinylog might be seen as something similar but with the advantage of the decentralization.
Of course Station is a great example but is more suited to be on the social network side...
Thanks!
@skyjake I had to open a bug report for FreeBSD since the current version available 1.7.3 has still the hamburger menu bug...
It looks like I am the unique FreeBSD user using Lagrange... 🤷♂️
😅
Do you believe in Gemini-only content?
I do, but it looks like someone got annoyed... 🤷♂️

For couriosity I installed Lagrange Alpha 4 for F-Droid and even dough it is "just" an Alpha, it really blows my mind how much is damn cool!
@skyjake thank you very much for porting Lagrange on the mobile space, I look forward for the first beta version.
Ariane and Deedum were great but Lagrange is a real game changer on the mobile space!
Simple guide to compile Lagrange by yourself on Debian & Devuan.
@skyjake if I missed something please do not hesitate to correct myself!

Hi Geminauts do you know any sane method to import/add identity/certificate to Deedum?
At the first glance looks you can only type those manually... 🥴
Dear @skyjake I tried to compile Lagrange(1.9.5 git version) by myself in a Debian VM but the result was pretty bad.
The window is sluggish even with --sw options, the hamburger menu doesn't work.
I know this is a PEBCAK issue but what I don't know is where I should start to check for mistakes.
The Flathub version works just fine then is definitely a PEBCAK thing... 😅😅😅
2022 - the end of the Linux Desktop!
At least for myself... I declassified Linux as secondary OS, from now on I will focus on BSDs mainly.
I have started reinstalling Devuan as stable in one disk, there are still stuff that are available only on Linux.
After that I will install and tuning FreeBSD, I am documenting everything, I'll publish everything when all the notes will be organized and redacted! 👌
Thus... Santa 🎅 brought "Metroid Dread" to my son, although Daddy 💪 said it was pretty scary for him... Well after 5 minutes of gameplay he was so scared that he admitted he couldn't play because the tension... The "big" gift tossed in the "trash can" e and then very big sadness...
So 💪 had to 🤜 🎅 and buy a new game... 🤷♂️

Updated the server that runs my capsule to FreeBSD 12.3; just the ordinary 15 minutes of panic but then everything solved and running properly!
Love FreeBSD <3
It is real battle at the "SpellBinding" game by ~stack

I cheated at the Spellbinding Game but I was too curious about the other words missing...

My latest gemlogs are finally online! 🎉🎉🎉

🤫
Can't get "gemlog.sh" by ~nytpu working on FreeBSD, looks like is too "linuxy".
Is there anyone that was able to make it work or can suggest me a similar alternative that works on FreeBSD?
Thanks in advance! ☺
The curse of BOM is chasing me... 😩
Xenia, but do not confuse with Xena 😂, is based on its description:
"a proxy which allows browsing Gemini sites using a normal web browser. Gemini is a text protocol similar to Finger and Gopher."
It supports certificate although I haven't tried it yet, but I'll do it and I'll let you know! 👍
@skyjake is it normale that I have a red floating two digits number on my left top corner of Lagrange? ^^;
I felt ashamed before while I was actually biting a Macintosh Apple... 🍎
Everyday I realize more that FreeBSD is an amazing OS, in my opinion much better than Linux.
I feel ready to leave Linux and jump on the BSD side, I foresight that for the end of year I may drop Linux for a new exciting tech adventure!
Good article about it:

The man is back... ;-)
Dear Geminauts,
is there anyone so kind to provide me the gempub specs capsule link?
Thanks in advance,
TGL
@skyjake maybe you can help me...
I moved my daily OS from Debian Bookworms Lagrange 1.7.3 (flatpak) to FreeBSD 13 Lagrange 1.6.5.
Certifcates, history and bookmarks are all there but I couldn't recover the "tab session". I guess it should be this file: "state.lgr"; however even after fxing the permission there is no way to restore the "Debian session".
Any suggestions?
Thanks!
the Gemini mailing list was on fire this morning... 😱
Mmhhh.... I just noticed that Telescope by @op2 hasn't been ported yet to FreeBSD 13... 🤨
Installing Project Lunar on my Sega Genesis Mini... 🤞🤞🤞
Why is the concept of "sustainable software" so underrated?
Hi Geminauts, I wrote a new gemlog about FBneo, RetroArch and OpenSuse but the instruction are mostly valid for any Linux distributions.
So far I am stuck at making some ROMs fully functioning with FBneo. It is supposed to manage them with "CTRLMAME Pro" in conjunction with "HBMame dumps" however I haven't even understood what those actually are... 😅
🤷♂️
gemini://gnuser.land/gemlog/2021-09-08-neogeo.gmi
@op & @op2 sono stato tutta la sera a leggere la tua capsula e adesso voglio usare una tastiera "Dvorak".
I spent all yesterday night reading your capsule and now I want buy a "Dvorak" keyboard!
😁
I am still browsing more the WWW than Gemini even though I am fully committed to the latter.
However I have this feeling that any time, not pretty soon though, there will be an explosion and it will be a major source to find reliable content... 🤔
Hi Geminauts,
By any chance did anyone already created a Capsule that translat es from a given language to another?
One thing I still don't get about Gemini - unfortunately I didn't follow the Gemini's evolution hence there quite few things I still don't get.
One of those is the reason why Gemini requires to close each line in the MS-DOS flavor.
I may understand that Win is still the predominant OS in the market but since Gemini is an internet thing and the 90% of Internet is built upon Unix-like servers I have difficult to understand the underlying reason; it looks unusual and a bit annoying if you are a *nix guy.
Is there any real technical motivation in that specification or it is just an unfortunate coincidence?
@skyjake
Latest Lagrange flatpak upgrade looks affected by a bug.
Address bar doesn't work even though you put an URL it won't open any page, the only way to open a new page is through links or history.
Lagrange fi.skyjake.Lagrange 1.6.2 stable system
I wonder how would be a fully Gemini experience with a device like this one:
https://shop.pocketchip.co/collections/frontpage/products/pocket-c-h-i-p-new
Does anyone know any similar devices still available on the market?
Cleaning and polishing my capsule a bit... 👨🔧
I didn't go so far but I am really impressed how so many people are so prolific and active!
Kudos for them! 👏👏👏
Hi Geminauts,
My third and last part about Telescope has been issued!
gemini://gnuser.land/gemlog/2021-07-23-telescope-part-three.gmi
Enjoy your reading! ;)

Today I was struggling to download an OGG audio files served through Gemini.
Eventually I found Gemget from the prolific " makeworld-the-better-one " and seems to work pretty well. Recommended!
https://github.com/makeworld-the-better-one/gemget/releases/
To be honest I also found cget from Oppenlab but it is a java application and I have my personal bias againsta java... ;-)
@skyjake this is a "feature request"... ;)
Is it possible change the beavior in the "iput text window" and use enter for the line-break a shift-enter to actually send it?
Thanks... 🙏
Hi Geminauts,
I found an interesting article about programming (relatively dated: 2018) somehow close to Gemini:
https://tonsky.me/blog/disenchantment/
@bacardi55
I have just read this one:

And I am totally agreed with you!
Hi folks,

Hi Geminauts,
I wonder if it would be possible building a Gemini front-end for Diaspora. Would it be?
Thanks 🍺
Greetings to @cage :)
PEBCAK Power!!!
My PEBCAK power has never been so strong like before these days...
It happened that I have hit an uncovered (maybe?) issue with GMI page, BOM and Clients...
I feel ashamed for this... :-P
I wonder if it may ever possible create an Hyper-Station that can federate at least with Diaspora.
Or a Diaspora fork that can use Gemini as front-end UX/UI... 🤔
@skyjake hello...
By any chance do you have or know any strategy to sync Lagrange among several computers?
Thanks! 👍
@Skyjake
The Italian community is preparing a presentation about Gemini, I think that doing it with Lagrange and GEMPUB would be very cool.
But for making a good presentation I think we should tweak a bit some styles. Is it possible changinge the font size of titles and paragraphs tuning some configuration files?
Does Lagrange support gif animation?
Thanks in advance,
Gnuserland
Hey folks
I just published a new gemlog...

Hi Geminauts,
I have a doubt... Can I serve PNG/JPG files through the Gemini protocol like:
my.caps.ule/myimage.png
or do I need an HTTP or FTP server?
Thanks! 🍺
Hi Guys,
Today I ufficially launched in orbit my capsule! :)

I am glad to be part ot this amazing community!
I was finally able to setup Micro editor to edit properly GMI files!!! :D
Installing OpenSuse Tumbleweed on a mini PC intended as TV Media Station!!! 😁
Lagrange 1.4 (Flatpak, Debian Testing, XFCE, default Fireforx) gets stuck while try to open a HTTP/HTTPS link, are you experiencing the same?
certificate issue** Hi guys I can't create a certificate that doesn't produce any kind of issue. Everytime I have some alerts from Lagrange, Deedum or Ariane. can you share with me your commands? My Capsule is hosted on a FreeBSD server. Thanks!
Hi Geminauts, do you use any sort of automation to create or organize your capsule? Thanks!!!
Any idea on how using Station on Lagrange? I create my certificate into android for Ariane and I'd like to use the same certificate for Lagrange as well, to preserve my current account. is that possible?
Hi Guys, I am here, I am also very close to release my first capsule!!! ;D
