mindblown by the social structure and behavior of a typical honeybee colony. and they don鈥檛 even write anything down. it must all be in the genes and learned behavior taught from one generation to the next and maybe pheromones.

Gotta necro this post because BEES! I am an on and off beekeeper - the library I work at has one (1) hive, but it's always a gamble if it survives the winter.

It will never not be amazing to me to see them set up their comb, how fast and accurate they built and how strong a comb is. Our hive is a top bar hive so all the combs are only attached to a bar on top, and they hold 2kg of honey each! It takes strength to crush an empty comb, too, the structure is super sturdy. 路 2 days ago

I saw a documentary on this recently, they communicate via vibration. It gets really crazy when a hive has to launch new queens, as queens will kill each other. It's a whole coordinated thing of keeping the new queens in their pupa, launching them one at a time, while keeping their own queen occupied. xD 路 1 month ago

It's all genes and epigenetics. Wait til you learn that all male bees come from unfertilized eggs. 路 1 month ago
