@_crusom_ kindness, careful thinking about which technology to adopt and to what extend, the immense sense for community, there are also things i may not wanna learn from them, of course. so far it has been a very interesting journey to read more about their lifestyle. 路 2 weeks ago

I think we should call it for what it is: religious extremism. It's the less murderous kind but it is still religious extremism. There's good points about self sufficiency and community. But then there's silly things like forbidding power tools... unless they're powered by compressed air. Or forbidding computers, but being allowed to look at computers as long as someone else drives the mouse/keyboard. (Some communities allow computers and an Amish computer is a particular obsession of mine.) There's a lot of loophole navigation that just seems silly. Some communities allow you to own a car, as long as you give rides to others in the community. 路 2 weeks ago
@bavarianbarbarian as opposed to what people do today when they have cancer, which is to go into debt pumping expensive poisons into their veins which kill them even quicker. And most of these people today have only ever known cubicles and capitalist consumption, so they're not even living much before their inevitable cancer diagnosis. 路 2 weeks ago
I agree. Especially with how the world is going today, I think they have some points. The (post?)modern world is extremely hard on us in mind, body and soul especially. Certainly a life of community, social cohesion, self-sufficiency, and spiritual reflection. I disagree with much of Christianity, as an English heathen myself, but I do respect them and their way of life. 路 2 weeks ago
