tfw you buy a mango, wait for it to grow ripe, take it to work as breakfast and then it's not ripe but already brown inside. At least my hissing roaches are enjoying it (they love mango more than anything)

@hanzbrix the problem is that if you lead with 'they are MUCH bigger' people don't really appreciate that either :D But yeah they are super neat, I love them. They make great ambassador animals too, we keep them at the library in between phasmids and kids love them. 路 2 months ago

@hanzbrix they don't hiss that much - it can get loud when the males fight but that's more because they run around at full speed, trying to ram each other off the cork bark. Otherwise they are mostly quiet. 路 2 months ago

@mimas congrats on the ootheca, that is so cool! I would love a mantis but I'm just not home enough to take care of one. But the pet I REALLY would love to have again but can't for the same reason are land hermit crabs, they are great, 路 2 months ago

We have something in common then. I鈥檓 currently keeping a mantis, and it鈥檚 hemimetabolic. Cockroaches are hemimetabola too, I think. Just from yesterday to today, the mantis laid an ootheca! 路 2 months ago

@hanzbrix I just think they're neat, I like insects/invertebrates in general. I started out with two pairs a good two decades ago, and right now the colony is probably about 50 adults and who knows how many nymphs. Plus they eat all the stuff I would otherwise throw away when cooking. I used to have a LOT more insects/invertebrate pets and pets in general, but the hissers are the only ones left due to lack of time and energy. Oh and four Heteropteryx dilatata at the library I work at. 路 2 months ago
