@Sascha @bryanredeagle @pluralistic what you can't transfer is your post history. If your old instance continues (you've left it because you don't like some aspect of it's policies) then they are still there, if orphaned.
If the old instance closes, for whatever reason, they're lost. On Bluesky you can seemingly store your own information independently, but obviously until they have more than one centralsed instance for you to link to there nowhere to move once the inevitable #enshittification occurs.
On Mastodon if your instance dies catastrophically and you haven't exported everything first you might have to start again entirely, losing your existing connections. I do export/backup occasionally but it's still not automatic.
