This is no different than real life where we cope with complex socio-cultural environment day to day.
My implicit technical decision of choosing a social app shouldn't cause me to be forever apart of my friends online, if their choice differs.
We see e.g. with BridgyFed how networks reshape on both sides to cope with social impact of this bridge technology.
