outer ears (pinnae, in the technical) are hugely important in social signaling for most mammals, so in a way it's very strange that most primates aren't capable of much ear movement. (Note that bobcat and lynx have tufts on their ears to enhance ear-signaling ... sometimes it's hypothesised this compensates for their very reduced tails. )
