One of the unintended side effects of the trades is that while you may get out on time, you don't exactly leave on time.
Today happened to be one of those days. I was off the clock at 3pm, had to walk around the jobsite to my car, load my tools, had a breif chat with one of my coworkers, got in the car and filled out some paperwork and started driving.
I've been in the habit of listening to some Youtube videos on the way home to help decompress, however, they were interrupted when my wife called, seemingly livid (although she said she wasn't mad) that I was still 20 minutes out when I'd normally been home.
This is not the first time this has happened, but I have also told her that my schedule, while typically predicable, isn't absolute. She didn't want to buy it. She thought I was late on purpose as she had elected to pick up our daughter from daycare.
The truth is that I left a few minutes later, schools are not back in session from spring break, and likewise, there's more traffic. I also was slowed down by traffc lights, sometimes you just get a bad sequence.
Fortunately the tardiness tension had dissipated by the time I got home.
