Thinking of ways to help new users.

2024-11-17

I've been looking over a few messages on iris, and the last two issues of the ctrl-z zine, and I can't help but think there's an opportunity there to make it more welcoming for new users to the ctrl-c.club. Obviously, these users would have a wide range of technical know-how. Maybe something could be tailored to those with little skills, and something else to those who are well accustomed to Linux and the available resources on the server.

I know it was brought up before, but it's sitting heavily(**--well, more accurately, stuck**) on my mind --being a user who might have wanted a little hand-holding in the beginning. I don't know how that tailoring would look like. I know pdf's, videos, and websites could be offered, but for me, I think I would've wanted something I could do at the command line. Perhaps those resources could be still be offered, but I was thinking of something more in the line of vimtutor. Like someone mentioned before, maybe there could be a menu system that could run in bash or some script that could access each of these "tutorials." (** At SDF.org they have something similar to this. The user can type specific key words and receives more information on the system, what they can do with their account, and what next steps they can take while on there **).

Also, there could be articles, on the zine, on some of the resources on the server --which could be tailored to those starting out on Linux, and others which could be tailored to more advanced users. Sometimes, I get the idea of using one of those programs and writing an article on it. It could even be on some of the fun stuff that gets over-looked. The only thing that keeps me from doing that, is that I'm not tech-savvy, and I don't think I can write a well-thought out article.

It's just a thought. I think I'll have to think about it more.

TTFN,

~j
