View submission: Improving walkability cost me an election
I am originally from Kentucky. I live in a rural area of Oregon, in a town that bristles at the idea of being in the Portlandia metro area. There are five roundabouts, three built since I've lived here, all on county or state roads at the edge of town, so none of the local elected officials can be "blamed" for them - but if they ever made a peep about supporting them, they would be voted out SO fast. The hate in this community for roundabouts - which have vastly improved safety and traffic flow - is unhinged.

It is by far the most citizen rage inducing issue I have experienced during my two terms. The best part about it is that all we wanted was to go to two lanes and do the streetscape. The state required the roundabouts due to the traffic study they conducted.

So weird that roundabouts have become such a cultural flashpoint. Seems nuts.

lol, I assume instead of "Oregon metro area" you mean "Portland metro area." Quite a Freudian slip!

Rural northern MN and WI are also getting round-abouts in impossibly stupid locations. Why has there such a push for them in the past decade or so even in locations where they make little sense?
