View submission: Improving walkability cost me an election
I naively thought that being communicative both online and in person would help. And it did in a few instances. But mostly it was just people refusing to discuss it after about 2 minutes. I learned that people just really love saying politicians are idiots and this was a great way to do that lol. The local news didn’t help, either. Literally never allowed us to explain the actual reasons for the project.

I have been in a position to sacrifice goodwill to make the hard decisions. You did the right thing and I'm not convinced there is any alternative.
I'm curious if you have thoughts on the focus on "messaging". You sound like me, you thought being extra communicative would work. I found even the most engaged folks that attended all the meetings had HUGE blindspots. Stuff we had been talking about for months and months. It convinces me that focusing on messaging over efficacy is just a way to waste our time and effort after a certain point. (Don't get me started on the legal liability issues making real transparency impossible)
