Battlespire was not too bad and very interesting as multiplayer. Unfortunately, the protocols used (IPX I believe?) were horrible and prone to disconnects, which would restart the game for everyone (no, it had no saves).

It used Daggerfall's excellent character creation system too. A decent idea, implemented with flaws.

I feel like Bethesda's always had character creation systems that blow other RPGs away. The only one that comes close in my memory is Darklands. In that one, you created a character at age 15, and gave them an occupation for 5 years. After that, you could finish the character, or have them do another occupation for 5 years, rinse and repeat. You could have a 50 year old character start the game with somewhat reduced stats (due to age), but high starting skills (due to experience).
