The jump in graphics quality and technology from the second to third is fucking insane.

Well it's the jump from 2d sprites in a basic 3d environment to a full 3d environment. It's like going from cartoon to animation movie.

Well, Morrowind did come out 6 years after Daggerfall. A lot happened for graphics from '96 to '02.

I should post a picture between the console version and the PC version. I put my PC gameplay up on the TV cause a friend wanted to watch what I was doing at one point and we noticed an insane difference between the details on the PC and PS3 (I'm running a Phenom II 1090T BE and XFX Radeon HD 6870 BE). The Ultra Texture mapping, Anti aliasing and other settings on the PC make the game look 100 times more crisp and defined.
herpderp edit: 1090T not 1080T

Morrowind *is* one of the major reasons that RPGs and open-world games are as popular as they are today.

In between those two were *Battlespire* and *Redguard*, making the transition a bit more gradual.

My guess is that's when direct X came into play more. But I don't know of the time too well.

That's because OP forgot Redguard.
