why does this action feel like cutting off the nose to spite the face?

I'm not sure how this is cutting off our nose. While obviously we enjoy having the subreddit open (otherwise we wouldn't have bothered putting in thousands of hours of effort of moderation over the last decade) it's not like we really gain anything except satisfaction from it being open.
