I think the problem is that there are a lot of visitors who don’t realise they need to stand on the left in this country.

It's not a totally invalid point - but here's the thing. Standing to one side is common courtesy in just about every country. The only difference really is which side you stand to.

Yes it's great when everyone stands to the same side - but standing to either side will still allow someone to get past generally speaking.

In OP's case and in lots of cases from my anecdotal observations people are standing smack in the middle without a care in the world or a thought to anyone else.

Fun fact, you stand on the right in the UK, kinda threw me considering we both drive on the same side
