Things that are opt in don’t get the traction they deserve. Even if people want it they won’t know about it.

This doesn’t hurt anyone so opt in is fine.

I'm not talking about opt-in vs. opt-out.

Presumably, the Reddit developers added an opt-out because they understood that some people might not want their online status broadcast publicly. But the opt-out checkbox is useless if people don't know that it exists.

And as other people have explained elsewhere in the thread, there *is* the potential for harm, such as stalking and harassment.

Maybe they don't deserve traction at all then..

If no one want's it, it's normal that on one would opt in.
