Can we get a copypasta to explain why there's shortages? There's a ton of questions about I daily, and I want to inform but I can only type out Covid + holidays = no stock so many times.

The simple ones:

Covid => lots of people staying in, more demand.

Holidays => lots of people buying gifts, more demand.

New consoles => The consoles use much of the same production capacity that could otherwise go to desktop CPUs/GPUs. Less supply.

More complicated:

Lots of upgrade cycles coming due. Nvidia is on a roughly two year release cycle, and the 20 series was underwhelming. The 30 series is a compelling upgrade for both traditional games and makes raytracing more viable.

Meanwhile AMD hasn't had a flagship GPU contender since...2015?

And on the CPU side of things, Ryzen 5000 is a significant upgrade to lots users who have been sticking to their aging quad-core Intel builds. And it's a drop-in replacement for lots of 1000/2000/3000 Ryzen users.

That and just new graphics cards and new CPUs that are really in high demand as well.

I think you've got the makings of one right there.
