They have all the money and power they can desire, and that's exactly why.
I think it's a "legacy" thing; not necessarily of an individual but rather of a generation/group of people. These people think that, today, we have the necessary resources and technologies to futureproof humanity itself ("humanity" as in human species, not as in being humane/compassionate.)
Today, they have the money and the resources, a populace who are willing to follow them, and they have the reach and direct/indirect power and authority to upend existing societal structures. So, "why not?"
To these people, expansion of all forms is the only nature of growth and the only form of progress that matters. They want humanity and civilization to last tens or hundreds of thousands of years into the future. They want to be the people who are remembered as being consequential for the existence of humanity and civilization 10,000 years from now. They want to be technocrats of today, and technolords of tomorrow, and memorialized as the technogods of the far-future.
In their universe, the rest of us, like much of human history, don't matter. To them, we are just a statistic; mere expectations of gross productivity margins and net liability risks. We are just a data point in their models.
Having this as their vision, they feel emboldened to think they are being reasonable, and right. If you question their motives/approach, you will be dismissed and ignored because you are deemed not having the knowledge and knowing the history and reasonings for why they will argue they are right.
If you still disagree/want out, too bad. They think this is bigger than you, them, and everything that today's societies are about. Hence, not only does your opinion not matter to them, they'll view it as something of negative objective value; ie., your opinions are harmful for the[ir] "greater good"
(My intention is to just out "why", not to imply we're doomed. We have to hope for a future that we believe in, not lose hope, and resist!)
There's nothing here!
