I had the same thing happen, for the opposite reason. I was teaching in a max security treatment facility, and after 3 years in that hellhole I was applying for every job that came along. The facility director didn't want me to leave, so he deliberately tanked every reference call he got. Finally one of the places where I was on the verge of being hired, so freaking close, told me that he'd trashed me in the reference. I ended up staying in the hellhole for another 2 years because I was convinced I couldn't leave without another job lined up. Finally, after having a major mental health breakdown, and after a group of students told me in detail how they planned to gang rape me, I left without a job. It was really hard, and took me years to get back on my feet, but it was worth it. Looking back, I should have left when he trashed me. When I was applying for jobs after that I gave the names of other employees as references, and explained that the director held a grudge for me leaving. I was able to bypass him entirely that way.
