View submission: /r/IAmA set to private over mod firing

I don't understand why the Jesse Jackson AMA would be blamed on Victoria? But some shit had to have gone down to justify Victoria getting fired with no warning.

Edit: After kn0thing's response[1], I'm a little worried we won't ever find out why she was fired. Hopefully /u/kn0thing will go into a little more detail somewhere visible now that the thread has been locked.

Yeah that was maybe not even in the top 5 most disastrous ama's, it doesn't seem on the face of it that there was anything she could've done about that and don't people usually work through a period after they're leaving or have an announcement at least. This looks weird as hell and karmanaht seems genuinely hurt aswell.

Has reddit 'let go' other high profile employees lately?

Edit: somebody on voat (yeah I know) says

I can confirm that the guests were not given a heads-up about this either. Talked to Paul Elio last night and everything seemed golden for the AMA today. This seems to have come out of nowhere.

and karmanaut says

It's not a matter of brinksmanship, it's that we honestly can't function the same way without Victoria. They knocked down a load-bearing wall in the House of /r/IAmA

What is going on here?

Because sometimes terrible decisions are made without things making sense; in one version you might designate a scapegoat that's done nothing but be loyal.

I do *not* know that this is what happened here, but I've heard of stupider things happening.

Here is my theory, take it or leave it. Victoria was responding to questions that Jackon never wanted to answer thus making them potentially libellous. Legal action was threatened by Jackson and Victoria was fired for the error.

Here's a link to the response Jackson gave to a question you would never expect him to answer and his reply makes little sense.

It would seem like a very reddit kind thing to suddenly act on the fact that they had a bunch of racists on the site .... like they just discovered it. And do so by fumbling around and doing something stupid....

For the record, I've no clue if that is the case.

I'll throw out a conspiracy theory for the hell of it:

/u/karmanaut mentioned that Victoria policed AMAs so they were done by the actual subjects and not agents. /u/kn0thing specifically mentions how upcoming AMA subjects are excited about doing them "without assistance"

Tinfoil: Reddit wants to reduce the chances of AMAs derailing by having them done entirely by PR people.

I'm a little worried we won't ever find out why she was fired.

Which, you know, in the grand scheme of things is probably the way to go. It would be super shitty for a company to broadcast why they fired an employee to literally millions of people except in rare circumstances (e.g. "the guy who replaced Jon Stewart's face with a butt in last night's broadcast has been let go.")

I just came from another three but the Jesse Jackson thing makes no sense to me. There have definitely been FAR more disastrous AMAs with far more relevant people (not just race baiting demagogues YEAH I FUCKING SAID IT, JUST TRY AND FIRE ME). Why would THIS incident be the thing that pushed Victoria out?

RIP in piece chooter.

We probably won't. It's a common courtesy that when you fire somebody, you don't publicly comment on the reasons. It happens in exceptional cases[1], but I suspect Victoria is smarter than that.

I am going to guess (occam's razor) and just say they didn't think they needed her. It sounds like the admin team had a contingency plan in place for when they let her go, where existing employees would take on her responsibilities.

r/IAMA thrived before her and will thrive after

They don't seem like they are looking to replace her, so it doesn't seem like she did anything explicitly wrong.

I don't understand why the Jesse Jackson AMA would be blamed on Victoria?

Jackson has been known to threaten to protest, denounce, and otherwise harass companies he dislikes. He's a proud old man - if he thought that the AMA made him look stupid he might just have called Reddit up and said "fire her".

If that is what happened, they would have given her a severance package which required her to not to discuss it. So we may never know for sure.

Nope. Wouldn't bet on it. I wonder if they gave Victoria severence package in exchange for silence too.

Jesse Jackson's team probably threatened to drop the hammer on Reddit for making him look bad and Victoria's job was offered up as sacrifice.

/u/kn0thing is going to have to explain, like it or not. Half the default subs are shut down over this; copouts like "we don't discuss that" just aren't going to work.

I mean no one likes Jesse Jackson and reddit sure let him know but this nigga marched with Dr. King during the bad times, so I don't think he would be too bothered by reddit's abrasive nature and casual racism.

There's so much of reddit that's more offensive than anything that went down in that AMA so I don't think it had anything to do with what happened to Victoria.

Maybe Jessie's people saw the actual content of the AMA, picked up a phone, and then threatened to sue. Jackson makes his living doing this, so it isn't out of the realm of possibilities.

Here[1] a Quora exec gives several plausible reasons Victoria was fired he claims came from higher ups here at reddit.
