View submission: R/Askmen discusses getting swarmed by women

View parent comment

I mean, there are some spaces that are male dominated, like gaming, but it’s treated as a bad thing and companies are working hard to try to get more women into it. Meanwhile reading has become a solidly women dominated hobby and nobody cares. About 80% of readers are women, if you go into a Barnes and noble it’s very much meant to appeal to women primarily.

And there’s nothing wrong with that. Just interesting to see the contrast.

the difference is that traditionally male occupied hobbies and occupations are a result of women being excluded for so long, while reading has always been open to anyone. in fact, reading used to be exclusive to men as well

I’m not just referring to hobbies. There have been literal clubs and spaces that have refused admission of women for centuries.

Iirc Gaming was only male dominated was thats what they "had" to choose back in the 80/90's in terms of who to market towards....which even then is kinda dumb because that still dosnt stop women from playing them...its not like there anything inherent to gaming that only men would enjoy it

Nowadays there is less of an incentive to gender market stuff what imo was an already pretapped market companies see as an untapped market.

Well with your example people saying that gaming being a male dominated hobby is bad is because of how toxic they can get. So many “gamers” complain about women in games and calling them woke and throwing temper tantrums.

Now I’m not gonna say I know a lot about reading community circles but I would bet money on that they aren’t even close to how bad gaming communities can get.

i hate to tell you this but men can start reading whenever they want. women having a certain hobby more than men is not discrimination against men.

edit: since your “point” is “oh male dominated hobbies cater to women sometimes but women read more!! what now feminists?!” uhh both of these are gender neutral hobbies, but women have been specifically excluded from video games for a LONG time. also, if you knew history, we were also excluded from reading!! and still are in some places!!

80%? That's pathetic. I love reading.

yeah but no one was like "men can't/shouldn't read, books are for women".
