New moderators wanted to crack down on "shills", old mod disagreed and came back from longtime inactivity to demod them. The newer mods got their positions back, I forget how.
As you can imagine, considering the sub it happened on, it was pretty great. Sorry I don't have links, but if you search for /r/conspiracy or /u/9000_sins (iirc), you'll find them.
