That's the hard part though. Any argument can be twisted into, you hate "do gooders" so you are bad.

That doesn’t make it a valid argument. Anything can be twisted into anything. If it can be twisted into that then it can be untangled as you make your arguments as to why the issue you have is with the messenger not the message.

Are they actually doing any good though?

People take on the "do gooder" persona for many reasons - it doesn't automatically mean that they are being effective.

Such as: 1) prestige and attention, 2) strong desire to feel useful, 3) scammers, 4) to keep society relatively peaceful

All of these people are vulnerable to the same thing. Attack the effectiveness of their actions.
