View submission: How are the Western made jets (Airbus/Boeing) operated by Russian airlines still flying considering the number of sanctions against the sale of spare service parts?

So, I have a stupid question:

Why would they be obligated to return aircraft that they paid for? If I buy something then you tell me to return it because we got into an argument, that would be ridiculous.

Because they didn't buy them.  Airlines operating out of Russia (at least most of them) didn't have enough money to buy airplanes.  So they're basically just renting them from western manufacturers.

Only about half of airlines buy there airplanes.  The other half lease or rent them.
