I don't know much about the armies besides what I have seen in the movies. They look cool. I like that they are not just humans vs humans like the latest box they released.

Rule of cool is a great way to pick your first army. Just have fun to start and take it from there.

Rohan is all about being offensive with the cavalry as they get bonuses when doing so, if the cavalry get charged by enemies instead, they don't get it. Also a good mobile army in combination with bows or throwing spears on horse.

Mordor is kind of every army combined, good attackers, good defenders, great magic, good choice of heroes etc etc

If you go with the osgiliath box you get Gondor instead of Rohan. They didn't have good magic in the last edition but they are a very defensive, hold your formation, type of army with their shield wall ability, let the heroes do the killing.
