Hello, as the title says. I'm wanting to get into GW Middle Earth. They are selling this box set near me for $120 or Best Offer on Facebook Market. I am aware it doesn't contain terrain or an updated ruleset. I am currently only playing Age of Sigmar and I'm also very new to it. Still learning how to play my army (Flesh Eaters Courts). Besides that, I have no experience with skirmish/war tabletop games.
Would Battle of Pelennor be worth it at this price or should I save some more money and get the Battle of Osgiliath (about $200 + tax) which the rule book is also outdated but I have read is placed on high regard in this community.
Any advice or questions regarding the difficulty curb on learning the game and acquiring what I need to play the current edition would be highly appreciated. Thank you.

If those are minis/armies you are looking to get into then yeah it’s not a bad deal at all.

All the starter boxes are great, minis alone. If you're wanting to start Rohan or Mordor it's a great set, and the older rules are still mostly used and the core concepts are continued forward to this current set.

Even without the current rulebook that box is very good value at that price.

The good side alone would cost more brand new than what they're asking. I'd grab that in a heartbeat!

I just play that ruleset as I play casual games, so it depends on who you play with. For my part it will never be outdated for casual play :)

Where are you? If you don’t want it I’ll take it lol. That’s a good deal if everything’s there, and if you’d want to play any of those factions. Witch king and theoden are both in several lists, so they’re both great heroes to get

That’s a wicked deal I paid £200 for mine brand new as I really wanted the box even though I knew the total cost of models is about 40ish less then that but to me it was something I wanted

It's a good deal, I recommend the new war of the rohirrim battle of Edoras set too, it's some of the best modelling GW has done in my opinion. I'm having a blast putting it together. Comes with the new rule set too.

From what I've seen, MESBG has less army rules, but more battlefield rules, and also more army customization
EX: there is difficult terrain in MESBG, but not in AoS. MESBG also has point values by model instead of by unit, and each model can move independently of every other model (AKA, no coherency rules)
I haven't had a chance to play, but I have the LotRs army book (yes, every army from the movies is in one book), and the core rules book

Not the best set imo. This is what I started with and I didn't enjoy the game much because of it. The cavalry can just out maneuver without terrain/obstacles. It wasn't till the osgiliath box I got back into the game and really enjoyed it. Lots more heroes and terrain and the enemy hero had a foot and mounted mini unlike the witchking who is only on fellbeast in the starter box.
Because you would need the new rulebook anyway it kind of negates the value of this starter box. There's still value there but not quite as good.
Witchking, troll and theoden alone are like $90/$100 at full MSRP and the cavalry are another $30/$40 so already the value is over $120 and that's not including any of the orcs or foot warriors for Rohan.
This would be ideal if you're building either of these armies and later picking up a battle host for an extra hero, cavalry and warriors for even more value.
I will say, if you're starting with a Rohan army, grab it. It gives you cavalry to start with which that army is all about. The new starter box with Rohan is lacking horses which is wild to me.

Dirt cheap, snatch it up! I just bought the same one for €200 (in europe), and that was a steal too!

It may have been said already just keep in mind the rule book you get in the pellanor fields box and the osgiliath box are out of date

I couldn't find the option to edit the post to add this update.
I was able to buy the copy of the game from the seller. It was sealed and in near mint condition (the box at least) Thank you for all your advice and experiences with this game. Excited to be part of the community now.
