To purchase you need to fill out an application to purchase with your local sheriff department. Application costs around $20 IIRC for the background check.

That will allow you to purchase a pistol from a store. You can use it at home, but to transport, your gun and ammo need to be in separate locked containers in your trunk.

If you want a CPL to carry on your body (instead of in the trunk), you need to take a CPL class. Cost typically ranges between $70-100.

Upon completion of the CPL course you need to take your certificate to your county clerk and pay another $115 for the actual CPL application, fingerprinting and background check. CPL is good for several years but does need to be renewed periodically.

Source: just completed my application Friday.

You do not need a CPL to legally buy a gun, fyi.

Classes are $75 and they provide ammo/lunch. In order to buy one, you need to apply for the license after the certification and wait for it to arrive in the mail, or you can go to the local police station to get a purchase permit.

In order to actually carry, you need the license though.

If you want to buy a *pistol* from a dealer, you must either have a CPL or get a purchase permit from a PD/Sheriff Dept. The dealer will deliver the police copy of the permit/sales record once the sale is complete

Taking the class is a prerequisite for the CPL. You take the certificate to the county clerk, fill out the application and pay the $100 CPL fee. They send you to sheriff to get prints and last i knew that was $15. Then they mail you the CPL if you aren't disqualified.

I live in Lenawee and purchased my first hand gun this week from Johnsons in Adrain. Guessing they lean right, but no political signs anywhere and where friendly and informative and patient. I went to renewed co sherif office, for $5 applied for a permit to buy a hand gun, 10 mins I had it, went back to Johnsons, gave them the permit, they did a fed background check on me, and 20 mins later, I legally purchased a hand gun, locked it with a cable lock, placed in trunk and went home. It was all easy and painless.

To clarify, you can own and carry in Michigan without a concealed carry permit, so long as you are 18, pass a background check as mentioned, and don't have felonies.

You can buy a firearm without taking a CPL course. There is usually no cost for the background check as it is a law that the dealer must run the check to complete the sale.

You select your gun you want to purchase, fill out paperwork, they run the check which usually takes about 5 minutes. Your given the gun and walk out.
