Grew up Lutheran. My experience was full of super chill, usually very progressive, actually intelligent and relatable people who lived to serve their communities. I assume this could be an outlier experience, but the wide majority of Lutheran people I encountered were good folks.

Normal ELCA experience, and ELCA is the largest Lutheran denomination in the US. The ELCA brings in civil rights activists from a variety of communities to speak to our youth at gatherings, let alone the actions of Lutheran organizations normally. If anyone is interested in connecting, and not just in a "join the church" way, now might be a good time for us to actively make connections with allies.

You were probably ELCA, not LCMS or WELS. WELS doesn't even allow women to vote in congressional meetings.

I believe you. To me it sounds like if this were Catholic Social Services or Protestant Social Services they may not have been questioned.
