Exactly this, simple supply and demand.

If you could go buy one new, you'd pay a quid. But you can't, so if you want one you have to pay market price.

A pack of Pokémon cards in 1999 probably cost a few quid. If you wanted to buy that exact same pack today, it'll cost you hundreds.
