You probably didn't have astigmatism for those 27 years. It can develop at any time and is something that can get worse (or better, apparently!) so it probably wasn't significant when you were younger. When I wore contacts 25 years ago I was told I had very mild astigmatism in one eye but it didn't need the expensive corrective (toric) lenses. So they sold me the normal soft monthlies but that it would be something to watch out for in future. If I was still wearing contacts now I would absolutely require at least one, if not both toric lenses as my astigmatism is measurably and visibly worse.

Well for as long as I can remember I've always experienced the typical symptoms e.g. rainbow effects around lights, night lights appearing like stars, the slight double vision etc
