View submission: Are opticians just glorified salesman's now?
100% agree.
Mine managed to pick up that in addition to my known slight short-sightedness, I have astigmatism, something that no one had caught for the past 27 years. Picked up a pair of Oakley's including the lens for ~£220 which is pretty similar to the online glasses sellers when you take the lens into account.
In fairness to them too, they have a notice on their website mentioning how they don't care about making money from glasses as their business model is more about supplying high quality contact lenses subscriptions.

Ones I saw asked me if I was going to get my contacts online. I said yes and they didn't even bother as they said they couldn't get anywhere near the prices. Odd thing to focus on.

You probably didn't have astigmatism for those 27 years. It can develop at any time and is something that can get worse (or better, apparently!) so it probably wasn't significant when you were younger. When I wore contacts 25 years ago I was told I had very mild astigmatism in one eye but it didn't need the expensive corrective (toric) lenses. So they sold me the normal soft monthlies but that it would be something to watch out for in future. If I was still wearing contacts now I would absolutely require at least one, if not both toric lenses as my astigmatism is measurably and visibly worse.
