View submission: Are opticians just glorified salesman's now?
This is a bit like someone complaining that spark plugs are £30 on Autodoc but their mechanic is charging £80 to change them.
The ‘marked up’ price you pay includes far more than *just* the frames. It’s the lenses, the fitting of the lenses, a little bit of salaries of everyone from the optometrist to the store cleaner, the rent, heating and lights in the store… please tell me you are aware of how businesses work?
If you can get those $15 frames for $15, good for you… but they’d be pretty useless without the lenses et al.

I can get pretty good glasses (frames + lenses) for £100 but not at the optometrist I used to go to, which sold the same thing for £500…

Of course I know that the business needs to pay for all that stuff and make a profit, I have no problem with that. My. opticians is not cheap but they are good at what they do I I’m happy to pay a fair price for the service. I do, however, begrudge the insane markup that is applied to most glasses. Charging £300 for Gucci frames that probably cost less than £1 to produce is, to me, taking the piss. Especially when those frames are made of the same injection modded plastic as a £50 frame. Then on top of that you often need to pay more than that for plastic lenses that, again, have an insane markup.
