So, the reason this comes up is because the two people want different things. This will never result in a man doing what you want to do because he wants to do it. The best case outcome for you is a man who has experienced this before might pick up on you asking him to do what you want without coming out and asking for it.
For men who are not familiar with this yet and are accustomed to direct conversation, "just do what you want" means exactly that. Whatever it is you're asking for isn't actually all that important to you, and he is free to go do the thing he was wanting to do instead of the thing you wanted him to do. He will only figure it out afterwards when you're upset at him for it.
