I think the stereotype comes from the fact that traditionally, women are the ones cleaning/tidying/taking care of the house. Meaning women know where things are because they put it there in the first place. And it's easier to ask than to search for it yourself.

Obviously I'm for a 50/50 share of the house chores (I'm a woman too) but this is how things were and how they still are in many households.

I think it’s less to do with tidiness. I could be in the tidiest room ever and still not be able to spot the thing right in front of me. Sometimes it just takes a second pair of eyes to offer a fresh perspective.
