View submission: When did people start washing fruit?

View parent comment

I lived in Kenya in the 70s. Some people would wash all fruit and veggies in a disinfectant solution. Salad was a no-go for many people as they didn't feel they could adequately disinfect the raw produce.

I think it became more of a thing in Canada when produce started to be imported year round. Instead of natural pathogens, people were concerned with the chemicals used in food production.

Good afternoon, thank you for this kind reply.

Over the years i had learnt that with time to body also adapted with the environment and i went from very careful to almost normal. We used water to wash the vegetables and in a Hilton we had eaten salad.

As now 69 year old i take care about food safety but i dont overbear it.
