View submission: When did people start washing fruit?
While working and living abroad in near east i washed any fruits and vegetables from the market or store. It was betwen 1978 and 1980 and i was not alone doing it.

I lived in Kenya in the 70s. Some people would wash all fruit and veggies in a disinfectant solution. Salad was a no-go for many people as they didn't feel they could adequately disinfect the raw produce.
I think it became more of a thing in Canada when produce started to be imported year round. Instead of natural pathogens, people were concerned with the chemicals used in food production.

Same. Lived in Iran in the 1970's. All our fruits and vegetables were washed, and the root vegetables were dipped in Roquell, an antimicrobial.
