There's lots of replies about diplomacy, but personally, I see it as geography.
What big ideological enemy does russia have to skirt past every time whenever it wants to move shipping from the white sea or the baltic into the Atlantic.
What nation, that has a central role in nato, does Russia have to deal with every time it wants to move its larger fleets out into the Atlantic.
What nation can act as a giant aircraft carrier if the event of all out war or sit just where Russia don't want them to becoming a thorn in the side of Moscow by blockading their access to global shipping lanes.
Britian is slap bang in the middle of where Russia doesn't want them to be. Yes, there are the Eastern European and Scandinavian counties in the way, too, but I imagine they feel they could take them on or at least hold the manpower away since there are a lot of shared boarders. Or knowing their hubris, feel they could successfully invade.
Britian, being a big ugly pile of rocks surrounded by water, has no such shared land border and is capable of at least holding on in a conventional war.

So you're the Vikings of the modern age.
Ragnar Lodbrok would be proud.

Living rent free since 1853. Into the valley of death rode the 600.
