Speaking of the castle of the Mad Archmage: I was actually part of the group, back in the day. The way I remembered it was, that you SEEMED to put the idea of “Gems inside of Beetles” into our heads, but I was not present for the first few sessions anyway. And players are greedy looters in any case that will believe anything if it gets them potentially more treasure 🙂

We actually de-populated the level of beetles (as you admitted during the game that the random encounter tables are mostly “pick a monster from a nearby room”) and the Lizard Men moved into the now vacant rooms nearby.
