Enron Hubbard - happy #buyNothingDay to those who observe, and a hearty RIP to my email inbox
Allen Very Serious Versfeld - I kinda feel like this whole Black Friday thing has run its course. Seems like it's all just emails trying to get me excited about it, and no action.
According to my inbox, Black Friday is about to start, is in its final week, was almost over last night, is today, is this week, is the whole of November, is on the website only, and is in-store only.
Allen Very Serious Versfeld - Anyway, Ford just went up in my estimation :)
Allen Very Serious Versfeld - Last week I was describing how I was trying to resolve a coolant leak on my wife's car, with a whole lot of clever workarounds. Anyway, they were ultimately crap workarounds - good enough to keep enough water in the car for short drives, but the problem was that the glue I was using degrades under heat. So she'd take a few longer drives, come home with an almost empty overflow reservoir and a screaming fan, and when I checked the whole assembly would crumble in my hand again.
So long story short: New month, new paycheque, new reservoir and new hose bought. Easiest car repair I ever did, everything just snapped into place. The only tool I needed was a pair of long-nose pliers to release and set the hose clamps.
Ru (Tech) :blobcatsadlife: - so these are AI generated, yeah?

Adrianna Pińska - My new (also Xiaomi) phone is fine for now (also, possibly as a result of negative feedback, you can remove a lot more of the default apps in the newer versions of the OS). But it's nice to have this option for later, just in case.
If you have an old bloaty Android phone, this is only medium-scary (as opposed to the full rooting / unlocking options). Apparently there's no way to truly brick the phone like this, but you can get it into a state that requires a factory reset, so maybe do a backup.
Adrianna Pińska - I didn't have a lot to lose here (it's not my primary phone; I could have done a factory reset), but I was careful to follow recommendations from multiple safe lists (the GUI app has some built in, and there are various forum posts floating around -- some innocuous-looking apps should not be touched; this also varies between phones). I also wasn't that aggressive, although I removed all the (safe) MIUI cloud backup stuff which I will never use.
Adrianna Pińska - *Anyway*, these aren't exhaustive instructions, because I'm not an expert and you shouldn't listen to me. The TL;DR is that while using adb without root can't *really* uninstall the bloaty apps (it just moves them), this *did* solve my problem, because disabling them and rebooting apparently cleared a metric fuckton of cached app data (the vast majority of that mystery category).
Dominic White - That this absolute crap made it to the front page of one of our national newspapers boggles my mind a full day later.
Ru (Tech) :blobcatsadlife: - I haven't found an alternative to Loop (from Android) on iOS. :')
Anyone has any suggestions?
I'm not expecting FOSS, and a one-time small payment is fine.
I've been using Done but it's over-engineered and a SaaS.

Ru (Tech) :blobcatsadlife: - y'all
i cant even
this is bad

Dominic White - Of course it’s no surprise that the nexus remains our credit bureaus which continue to enjoy unnecessarily massive privacy exceptions in POPIA with un-opt-out’able automatic submissions of our financial activity.
Dominic White - There have been so many data breaches in South Africa that there’s this fog of war blanketing the space such that any new breach has automatic deniability
Enron Hubbard - Content warning:uspol - it's not a tariff
it's the Trump Tax
calling it a "tariff" does not resonate with the people who most need to hear and understand what's actually happening
accuse those in power of being snobby elitists because they keep using fancy words like "tariff" to hide the fact that it's a new tax
use their sloganeering and two-dimensional framing of the world against them
you can't build that barn because of the Trump Tax on lumber
your coffee costs more because of the Trump Tax
the Boston Tea Party was a protest against taxes just like the Trump Tax
the American Revolution started because of things like the Trump Tax
Enron Hubbard - i was listening to a podcast recently in which the internet was described as a psychedelic substrate and it really resonated
there was a parallel drawn to folks who thought if you just gave acid to an asshole they'd see the universal Oneness of the universe and stop being an asshole
which doesn't work in practice - you just have a tripping asshole who will probably make things worse for everyone around them
techbros do something similar when talking about connecting the world - there's an assumption that if you just get everyone able to communicate with each other, some Universal Oneness will emerge
which doesn't work in practice - you just have assholes with better access to their victims
so we've basically got a world that's on a bad trip and making things worse for everyone around them
but a bad trip can end if you stop eating acid
tomasino - It really doesn't reflect well on us as a technical society that we have allowed printers to continue to be so aggressively noncompliant for over 71 years
Kenneth Kalmer - The Slack AI trial has been going really well…
tomasino - Saw this spreadsheet someone is building up about emigration options for Americans. It's still in progress but might help some of you.
Gustav H Meyer - very relevant

Wilmar - Reading about everyone’s “I’m still on M1 with only 1TB, will likely upgrade to M4” stories, on my Intel i9 with 512GB 😂.
Enron Hubbard - goddammit why did i have to get curious about tape loops
Kim van Wyk - Something I learned this week that many other people probably figured out ages ago - browser dev tools can be very handy in figuring out why AWS configuration instructions return an error:

tomasino - This thing has been working for over 2 years now. I have no idea how, but it's very nice.
Anyone else try these things?
Enron Hubbard - fuck a frontpanel, these 13x25cm perfboards i ordered already have the correct hole spacing to mount straight onto eurorack rails
Enron Hubbard - I ordered a bunch of knobs and RGB lit encoders for a thing I'm tinkering with. They accidentally sent me the wrong style knob, leaving me with dozens of knobs that don't quite fit the project they were intended for.
Clearly, the solution is to get more RGB encoders and come up with a contraption that needs dozens of them.
Kim van Wyk - @davidcampey for context on why I mentioned you out of the blue to @mkennedy:
https://talkpython.fm/episodes/show/478/when-and-how-to-start-coding-with-kids
Kim van Wyk - @mkennedy on the topic of reaching kids to code I can recommend @davidcampey as an excellent followup guest. He's deeply into the topic and has given fantastic talks on it - for EG:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=sH4NvrxalWghttps://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_8L-iyK_hL0And
a great robotics talk he gave yesterday with his 11 year old daughter which we'll have online in a few weeks. He's heavily involved in teaching kids the joy of coding and making through CoderCamps and probably 10 other things I don't know about.
Kenneth Kalmer - I need some advice from the #cycling community: this will be my first winter commuting via bike into #London, what gear is essential for a comfortable ride to work? How do you dry your stuff at work? Waterproof shoes or overshoes? Backpack or pannier bags? Rides are just shy of 20kms.
Kenneth Kalmer - I have a comfy helmet and cap for underneath, and great backpack that is waterproof…. I have an e-bike, it has great fenders and bright lights too
Wilmar - @peterfriese Do you have some comparison information of Vapor / Swift on Server vs Firebase? Does it even make sense to perform a comparison, are the two platforns competitors in the same domain?

Gustav H Meyer - RSS is as useful as ever. Nice to see some people still talking about it.
Using an RSS reader restores a sense of deep satisfaction, control and personal connection to the web that many folks have forgotten - or never experienced in the first place. RSS makes you the curator, the arbiter of your own attention.

Robert MacLean - DevConf has such an awesome idea, the badge has a B.L.A.N.K. space and you can customise it with stickers to show off who you are!
A big thank you to Ross Simpson who inspired this with his badge hacking at DevConf 2023 and Michael Minutillo who came up with the awesome name B.L.A.N.K. which stands for Badge Located Assertion of Notable Knowledge

Justin Wernick - I am learning that moving house with children is a million times harder than normal moving house 😅. There's an endless list of important things to unpack, set up, figure out, or fix. But also, the kids are stressed, and need playing with, and need their games with each other moderated so they don't start wrestling and hurt each other. #parenting
Justin Wernick - Why does invoicing feel this way? 😂

Justin Wernick - Shout out to Magit's "DWIM" commands (Do What I Mean) . It works great for me to move my cursor to the appropriate part of the git status buffer and hit the diff dwim key and have it show the diff that I mean. (Unstaged changed? A single commit? The branch I'm about to merge?)
Strangely, it took me a while to find out about it 😅. I hadn't encountered the acronym DWIM before, so for a long time when it popped up as an option I assumed it wasn't what I meant because I hadn't heard of it 😂
Adële - Cyclic Universal Clock
I'm thinking about a new representation of time. With the current time system, we refer to UTC time. I find this annoying, because it uses the same notions (hours and minutes) as the local time system. I find this ambiguous...

Kishyr Ramdial - @caseyliss Big time Callsheet fan, thank you for the app! Have an idea for you: add the top 50/75/100 trending tv shows and movies to Spotlight using the search API, so when you search for “Survivor” it shows a result that deep links directly to the show page on Callsheet. I used to often search tv shows and movies this way, and then hit the IMDB link at the bottom to open that app. Would be cool to open Callsheet directly from a Spotlight search result.

Adële - It will happen some changes in my personal life and I don't know if I will be able to continue to serve pollux.casa hosting. (I have not said it will be closed, I'm looking for solutions)
So, I have put account opening on standby.
For the moment, no change for existing accounts. I will give more details further.

You Can Call Me Al - A #newsletter question, if anyone is able to offer advice. Are there any newsletter email service providers that include collaborative features while creating emails? ie. ability to leave comments etc for other team members on draft newsletters etc? I would love something like that but haven't seen anything like it.
You Can Call Me Al - Exciting times in the tech/journalism/dataviz space at the moment. Loving working with SvelteKit, and getting into PlanetScale for SQL. Already starting to use DALL-E and OpenAI for images/story summaries etc. 2023 is going to be wild/exciting/scary
You Can Call Me Al - Vercel's new commenting feature for preview deployments is awesome. I've been looking for a way to collect feedback on projects from our distributed teams and this could well be exactly what we need.
