This video will show how to link any bash script file to a right-click menu on Linux, by creating a .desktop file. I'm using it to select a few .mp4 video files, and then to batch convert their AAC audio codec to PCM audio codec. But you can link any script file that you want to use on your files.
I also explain how to change the context so that the script would only show in the menu for a particular MIME type e.g. video, audio, text, etc files.
I intended this to work for DaVinci Resolve as it does not support the decoding of AAC audio codecs at all on Linux (free or paid version). At the end of this video, I demonstrate how I can now quickly convert any video with AAC audio codecs, within a few seconds, from "inside" DaVinci Resolve.
The bash script file has been modified, after I recorded the video, to now handle single or multiple audio track conversions.

Join us for a presentation by the creators of tiny letters for mothers, a non-commercial and interactive data visualisation platform based on stories of early motherhood.
The project was collaboratively conceptualised by creative research scholar Dr Dee Marco and creative developer Lara Koseff. In their presentation Dee and Lara will discuss the origin of the project, some of their design inspiration and why they decided to utilise information design and data visualisation in order to find new ways to tell the many stories of motherhood that often go unrecorded. The platform is primarily inspired by Dee’s work around motherhood and community, as well as Lara’s interest in data visualisation as a design tool that can provide extraordinary insight into human needs and values. In the second part of the talk, Lara – who studied frontend development last year – will discuss how she has been coding the platform herself, using React and the data visualisation library D3.js.
She will discuss the challenges she has faced as a coding novice, while highlighting the remarkable potential of learning these new skills through a personal project that she is passionate about, even as a primary caregiver in her 40s.
Speaker 1: Lara Koseff
https://www.linkedin.com/in/lara-koseff-37a04b7/
Lara Koseff is a versatile creative, writer and developer interested in the intersection of art, data and tech. Her skill set is diverse, ranging from project management, research, and curating to writing, editing, design, and communications. More recently, she has expanded her expertise to include coding, frontend web development, and UI/UX engineering, with a particular focus on JavaScript libraries, React and D3.js. She has over 15 years of experience working in the cultural sector, for galleries, publishing companies and museums. In 2020 she co-founded INCCA (Independent Network for Contemporary Culture & Art) with Londi Modiko and Nthabiseng Mokoena, a non-profit company that aims to foster independent cultural practice. INCCA grew out of numerous projects supporting independent creatives, including the UNDERLINE show in 2019. From 2010-2018, she worked at Goodman Gallery Johannesburg, primarily in a curatorial and editorial capacity and as a liaison for over 15 artists. She was part of the core team who established and managed SOUTH SOUTH, a curatorial project that evolved into a collaborative platform in 2020.
Speaker 2: Dr Dee Marco
https://www.linkedin.com/in/dee-marco-ba831417a/
Dee Marco is a creative research scholar based in Johannesburg, South Africa. Dee’s research pivots around social and cultural practices and experiences of the everyday, particularly in relation to person-hood, mothering identities, Black feminisms, practices and communions of care and critical joy finding in an exhausting world. She is the founder of the multimodal research project, Mother.Lab and is a Senior Lecturer in Media Studies at Wits University. Dee’s research is also broadly interested in visual culture, cinema and black women’s methods of narration and story telling. Dee is a research associate in The Centre for Race, Gender and Class at The University of Johannesburg. In addition to critical creative work, Dee hosts diversity workshops and conversations with caregivers and mothers. Dee is the co-editor of the book, Sasinda Futhi Siselapha: Black feminist approaches to cultural studies in South Africa’s twenty-five years since 1994. Dee has contributed to various academic journals, newspapers and podcasts, including one she co-hosts, titled Mamas with Attitude. Dee’s work through Mother. Lab focuses on a series of critical public engagements over stretches of time. Some of the projects are: House of Complaints, Tiny Letters and a collaborative data visualisation project called, tiny letters for mothers. Critical to the work is the collection of data about motherhood and mental health as well as the visual and aesthetic attention and experience brought into the work as a way of consistently marking the various and ongoing labours of mothering and/ or care.

Pastebin is a long text and code snippet sharing site. The site has some limitations for free accounts, and does not allow file uploads.
Pastebin recently flagged one of my pastes as spam, so I needed to look for an alternative. The best two open source self-hosted alternatives I found were PrivateBin and MicroBin, both of which do what Pastebin does, and sharing of files. My video takes you through a comparison I did to try to decide which of the two would be best for me to use. I also mention a workaround for not being able to remove a MicroBin paste, and demonstrate how both these applications work.

In this episode of The Wide Awake Podcast, I interview Zephany Nurse, also known as Miché Solomon, whose extraordinary story will leave you speechless. Zephany was abducted from Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town when she was just two days old in 1997. For roughly 17 years, she was raised by a woman named Lavona Solomon, who kidnapped her, while her real parents searched tirelessly for her.
As Zephany grew older, rumours started circulating at school about a younger girl who looked just like her. This led to an unexpected meeting between Zephany and the girl, who turned out to be her biological sister. This revelation set off a series of events, including an investigation, a court case, and a dramatic family reunion.
In this conversation, Zephany opens up about her harrowing journey, the trauma of being raised by a kidnapper, the emotional rollercoaster of discovering her true identity, and the legal battle that followed. She also shares insights from her book, which chronicles her life story in incredible detail. Tune in for this gripping and emotional episode.

Talk 1: A11y Beyond the Theory: Integrating Accessibility Testing into Your Workflow - Lucky Nkosi
Ensuring that we build accessible solutions is about more than the moral obligation of removing accessibility barriers for all. It has significant financial and commercial implications too. With more than 30% of the population living with some form of impairment, the industry is finally coming to terms with the importance of accessibility.
However, while the theory appears to be understood, accessibility considerations in software solutions are still treated as a nice-to-have and an afterthought. One of the big reasons for this is that testing for accessibility requires extra work.
In this hands-on talk, we'll go through a brief outline of what A11y is and its importance. We'll then dive into key practical tools that can be used by everyone in the software development lifecycle to ensure that the solutions we produce are as accessible as possible.
If you're interested in making sure you provide accessible software solutions for everyone, then this talk is for you.
Performance monitoring is an important part of running a successful theme park. Like a distributed system, theme parks have separate components (attractions). Each has a queue in front of it. How can we find out which of them are the least efficient? Which ones are slowing us down? Where should we spend time optimizing?
Join me for a roller-coaster ride through distributed system performance monitoring. Find out which measurements tell you the most about your system and how to optimize it. As an added bonus, you'll learn how to run a successful theme park!

Talk 1: Unstyled components: The standard component library for the web
Accessibility has always been a first-class citizen on the web. However, with modern web applications, it has unfortunately taken a back seat to functionality. This is, in large part, because creating accessible components is hard, and web developers are unaware of the wonderful tools at their disposal that can help in this regard.
This talk is about shining a light on what it looks like to have accessible components, why it's so hard to create them, and how we can utilise the power of unstyled component libraries to supercharge our abilities to create accessible web components.
This talk is not so much to convince the audience of the importance of accessibility, but about empowering the developers who are already accessibility conscious with the tools that will make it easier for them to create accessible web applications.
About the first speaker:

This talk does not contain any "new" research but rather just a full presentation of the git internals, the known inherent vulnerabilities and their resolution - all of which have been previously documented.
The first section aims to provide an overview for people not familiar with git, before diving into the building block - so called "plumbing" - tools utilized by git to perform its version control. This serves to provide a better understanding for the vulnerabilities as well as how to better utilize git.
The second section covers inherent vulnerabilities such as lack of author validation and secrets in version control histories, some of which will be accompanied with a basic demonstration. This also provides a baseline for what to look for from a defender's perspective
Finally the preventative measures and resolutions will be covered to address the aforementioned issues. Some simple measures in addition to the knowledge of the vulnerabilities can vastly reduce most of the surface area and risk associated with the covered vulnerabilities.
Some of the trippiest theories I've ever heard. At the heart of the Milky Way, a cluster of stars has baffled scientists, appearing as if they are forever young. A new theory proposes a mind-bending explanation that could rewrite our understanding of stellar evolution: These stars could be feeding off dark matter – powered indefinitely by the most mysterious substance in the universe.
Studying these objects may lead to breakthroughs in our understanding of dark matter and the universe itself. Some even speculate that dark matter may even organize into forms of dark life. The only way to know for sure is to keep looking.

Today I'd like to introduce you to a small project I've recently published. The "Brainmade" Mark is something I will be attaching to any works of mine that were mostly made by me or my friends, not by generative AI tools like GPT.
I've built a small website at

Developer User Group Meetup - 17 April 2024
Title: Why writing tests is valuable and the benefits of good CI/CD practices.
Most startups are concerned with getting code to production as fast as possible. They cut corners on testing because their boss wants the work done yesterday. This leads to difficult to extend code in desperate need of refactor and longer times to dev or getting your code to production.
Facilitator: Owen Carter
I started my career wanting to be a developer, but hitting brick walls applying for jobs so I ended up in testing. In my first job It was so monotonous and predictable I automated it in CRON; it got me fired eventually but it gave me the time to learn to be a developer.
Personal life: I broke spine aged 20 just before my career started. I live in constant pain and the urge to quit is strong, but I wasn't about to let a physical disease stop me from doing what I love.

When I write a new Rust program, I don't start with functions or methods or any runtime code. I start with the model of my application, expressed with Rust's rich type system.
Interacting with the real-world, on disk or through the network is too slow for me, at first, I need to iterate faster than that, to sketch out my ideas, unconstrained by the outside world.
This compile-checked whiteboarding I call Compiler-Driven Development.

Love them or hate them, Jupyter Notebooks have become an indispensable tool for data exploration, analysis, model development and collaboration. In this talk, we'll try to convince those who love them to use them in a way that those who hate them, hate them less.
We'll start by talking about what makes Jupyter Notebooks indispensable, and what makes them awful. We'll also talk about the various ways people use notebooks. As part of this we'll do a whirlwind tour through IDE options, from local Jupyter in your browser through to the many managed cloud-based options available today.
Then we'll describe some of the patterns and tooling you can use to make your Notebooks less awful (perhaps even beautiful!). Some principles we'll discuss are: good coding practice and style (using nbqa and other code quality tools), version control and reviewing (using Github, Jupyterlab git extensions, nbdime, nbdev, and ReviewNB), testing (using nbval, nbmake, testbook), dependency management (virtual environments, requirements files, Docker), and automating your code quality efforts (Github actions).
The ecosystem of tooling for Jupyter Notebooks is growing, with new packages and features being developed to help smooth over some of Jupyter Notebooks' limitations. This review will give you a birds eye view of some of the current tooling your team can adopt to improve the quality of your Notebooks!

Data are continuously generated from diverse areas such data from new paradigms such as network devices, cloud computing, wireless and intelligent systems for communications, wireless sensor network (WSN), financial transactions, environmental monitoring, radio frequency identification (RFID), telecommunication, military surveillance, weather monitoring, Healthcare and medical diagnoses monitoring, electricity usage prediction, and real-time surveillance. In the streaming setting, data is unceasing, potentially unbounded, and continuously evolving with time. A tool that can be used as an extension on the Massive Online Analysis (MOA) framework is River, a Python library. This talk will introduce listeners how to use River to do machine learning on streaming data. River library supports different machine learning tasks, including regression, classification, and unsupervised learning. It also supports tasks such as computing online metrics and concept drift detection. River can be used to build a machine learning pipeline and evaluate the model’s performance on a streaming dataset.

Have you ever tried your hand at GeoGuessr, the online game that challenges you to guess your location from random street views? In my talk, I'll unveil the surprising connections between the problem-solving skills used in this game and the world of hacking and cybersecurity.
My journey started with GeoGuessr, where I noticed how similar the way we think during the game is to the thought processes of hackers and cybersecurity experts. It was like learning to hack the real world without realising it!
During the talk, we'll delve into the fascinating world of seemingly ordinary photos and videos on the internet. I'll emphasise why it's crucial for all of us to be cautious about what we share online. You'll also hear real-life examples of how geolocation, the art of figuring out locations based on clues, has been used to find terrorist compounds and provide crucial evidence in missing persons cases.
But it's not all about risks. I'll also demonstrate how we can harness geolocation skills for positive purposes. Through this research I was able to develop an AI tool using machine learning that can analyse and identify street bollards, a key factor in geolocation.
Join me for this talk, where we'll explore the intriguing connections between a simple online game and the dynamic world of geolocation in cybersecurity.
The epic tale of trying to bring a Rotary Un-Smartphone to market.
With the advent of cloud based technologies and identity management solutions; as well as the widespread adoption of these technologies by businesses and users has introduced new attack vectors that malicious actors can try abuse. One of these is a new type of phishing, called consent phishing.
In Consent Phishing, an attacker-controlled application requests dangerous or sensitive permissions over a user's account or organisation's tenant. The goal of Consent Phishing is to gain the necessary authorisation (consent) over an aspect or portion of a user's account. The consent grants are managed through an Identity Provider using the OAuth 2.0 framework; examples of these technologies would include Azure, Facebook, and Discord.
This talk will explore the concept of consent phishing and utilise examples of consent phishing in Azure to illustrate the explanation. The talk will focus on both the offensive perspective and the defensive perspective of the attack and its relevant indicators of compromise. The talk will also show a high-level investigation of how other technologies tackle the problem of consent phishing.
=====================================================
As there is space, I will add the following planned format for my talk:
1. Introduction.
An introduction to the talk, highlighting what the traditional phishing vec-
tors - like payload and credential phishing - are, and how consent phishing is
different.
2. What is OAuth?
A high level view of how OAuth2.0 work and how authorisation is given.
Focus will be on defining the different parties in the flow and their roles.
3. What is consent?
Background information for how consent grants work with the OAuth2.0
framework. Also a discussion around how authorisation grants are requested
and given to users or applications. This will include a consent prompt that a
user would receive in this situation.
4. How is this useful?
Tying together the previous sections we will look at what the legitimate
use case is of consent for application. This section will emphasise how this is
extremely useful functionality that is not going to be removed.
5. Turning the good to bad?
Once we understand how consent works and why it is useful we will look
at how easily it can be abused. For example, a bot that deletes spam from an
inbox is generally also able to spam others from the same inbox.
6. How do this fit into the phishing playbook?
Exploring the kind of controls that affects this type of phishing and the kind
of controls that it bypasses. This section will also introduce consent phishing in
Azure and give real world examples of cases where a red team would use consent
phishing.
7. Bringing it all together, making an attack happen.
Pulling together all the aspect of consent phishing to take a high level walk-
through of how a consent phishing attack in Azure could be undertaken.
8. The outcome.
Showcasing a couple different scenarios of a successful consent phishing at-
tack. Including reading user mail, reading files, and higher privileged actions
that can be undertaken, provided appropriate consent is granted. This section
will also discuss what attackers can do from the context of a successful attack,
such as harvesting sensitive information or trying to pivot to an on-premise net-
work.
9. Finding the bad guys, what IOCs we have.
Once an attack has been executed, we will look at the logs that would be
generated. There will be a small switch to a blue team perspective of how to
find consent phishing attacks and the type of indicators that one could look for.
An interesting point here is that some of the Indicators of Compromise that are
provided in Azure logs can be misleading as to the source of compromise.
10. We’ve seen Azure what else?
This section will investigate how different technologies have different ap-
proaches to managing consent with their application. We will look at what
some technologies do better and what others do worse. This section will also
try attribute different potential cases of consent phishing and its targets.
11. Wrapping Up; Is the world burning?
Final thoughts on the presentation so far, reviewing where consent phishing
could be used but also the challenges that need to be overcome in order to
successfully perform an attack. Discussing as to how this is another tool in a
red team’s toolbox and something that a blue team should be aware of.

We got The Birthday Singer Jeff Latham and a few others in our paddock to wish you a Merry Christmas.
We hope you enjoy this one.
A hall sensor was added under the rotary dial's face plate to detect when the fingerstop is at it's limit. What's shown is debug firmware running where the white "filament" LED flashes every time the hall sensor detects the finger stop.
Fingerstop limit detection was needed to resolve a dial reliability problem, owing to the way I tried to value engineer the rotary dial's pulse counting switch.
With the Face Plate now being an electrically active board, this crazy phone now has FOUR printed circuit boards: The motherboard, daughterboard, dial faceplate, and the antenna. Yikes.

In this talk I will begin by delivering the "State of Delve" update. In similar fashion to the popular "State of Go" talk I will begin by discussing all of the exciting new features and changes that have happened over the past year, since last FOSDEM. Following that I will go into a live demo showcasing how Delve can leverage Mozilla RR in order to perform deterministic debugging. This talk will begin by introducing users to the concept of deterministic debugging and the power that comes with it. Following that I will launch into a demo showcasing how to leverage this concept to debug an otherwise unpredictable highly concurrent program. Users will walk away with immediate practical knowledge they can begin applying in their day to day debugging.
It's been a year since last FOSDEM and a lot has changed with Delve! I will discuss all the new features and changes that have been implemented in the last year.
Following the "State of Delve" introduction, I will dig into how Delve can be utilized to perform deterministic debugging. This style of debugging enables users to record the execution of their process and "play it back" in a deterministic fashion in order to more quickly and efficiently perform root cause analysis on a bug that may otherwise be difficult to reproduce or track down. This section of the talk will begin by introducing the concept of deterministic debugging and why it is so useful and powerful. Once everyone is familiar with the concept I will launch into a live demo showcasing how to leverage this debugging approach to track down and fix a bug which is hard to reproduce and happens only intermittently.
Attendees will walk away with practical knowledge that they can begin applying to their debugging problems immediately.

The "official" mini-debuginfo man-page describes the topic best:
❮blockquote❯Some systems ship pre-built executables and libraries that have a
special ❮code❯.gnu_debugdata❮/code❯ section. This feature is called MiniDebugInfo.
This section holds an LZMA-compressed object and is used to supply extra
symbols for backtraces.
The intent of this section is to provide extra minimal debugging information
for use in simple backtraces. It is not intended to be a replacement for
full separate debugging information (see Separate Debug Files).
❮/blockquote❯
In this talk I'll explain what it took to interpret support for mini-debuginfo
in LLDB, how we've tested it, and what to think about when implementing this
support (e.g. merging ❮code❯.symtab❮/code❯ and ❮code❯.gnu_debugdata❮/code❯ sections).

This is a talk I did for the 2016 World Domination Summit in Portland Oregon. The idea was to take a new audience from zero to hero on the whole concept of the "How and Why" of getting wealthy enough so that you never have to work again - while you are still young.
Note: this video was originally republished elsewhere on Youtube by other channels without my permission, but this is the only rightful place it should be posted since it's my own work.
I hope these ideas prove to be as useful to you as they have to me!
I've left the Linux world behind. Here are my thoughts, likes, and dislikes after using OpenBSD as a full-time daily driver for over a year and a half.

My 1999 Honda Odyssey Van, "Vanna" is still in brand-new condition - how could this be??
On top of that, she has saved me about $100,000 over the time I have owned her, compared to the average person's car ownership and use patterns.
In this video, I break down the FIVE steps to get these kind of results yourself.

This talk will provide learnings from local government on using open source software to enable and scale research and analytics. Governments have a strong proprietary software focus, with good reason. There is however a grey area where open source and proprietary software clash and it is here where open source excels.
This talk is of interest to anyone who is working in a large organisation, with a proprietary software focus, and wanting to introduce and roll-out open source software.

This talk will take a look at some of the issues surrounding IPv4 and IPv6, why you should consider deploying IPv6 and starting to move there. This talk will focus on the why but will also provide some pointers as to possible strategies.

This is more of an introduction and is aimed at people are new to docker or are still wondering what it is and what some of the paths are to using it in their lives.
We'll cover the basics of what docker is and does and some of the tooling options available to use it in the real world.
Specifically, we'll cover StackFiles, Swarm, Kubernetes, Local and Live use and deployment.
My Producer (son) and I decided to rent a top of the line Tesla Model 3 and head out for a beautiful road trip, as a way of testing out both the car and the rental app/service called Turo.
Why is this related to personal finance and early retirement? Because if you can rent a vehicle easily when you need one (whether it's a cool one like a Tesla or just a workhorse like a van or pickup truck), then you don't need to own one yourself.
Or at least you can get by with just a simple commuter vehicle and rent specialized rigs only when you need 'em.
