Chigusa Nagayo vs. Dump Matsumoto (AJW 08/28/1985)

Some people think of this as more of an angle, some people think of it as more than a match. I get it, it's not easy to define. Hell, I think the easiest part to define about this is the status that it has rightfully deserved and has been rightfully given.

Iconic, game-changing, history-altering. Especially with the emotional post-match where Chigusa gets her head shaved.

One of the things that is fantastic about professional wrestling is the showcase of two things, the first of which being the dynamic of power, and the second being struggle. I'm sure if I ask any wrestling fan why they love professional wrestling, they'll provide me some form of the latter.

If anything, this match is one of the showcases of the absolute exoskeleton of what struggle is. Sloppy brawling, Chigusa going against her ultimate rival, the bare, basic understanding that Dump is there to maim and murder Chigusa in any way possible, as Dump wants to strip Chigusa of her pride.

So, so much to say. All of it happening to be words that juxtapose themselves ten thousand times, because that's what this match is.

Much like Villano III vs. Atlantis, this one is atmospheric, as thousands of little schoolgirls are there to see their hero, Chigusa, claim Dump's hair, to secure this prestige, this necessary win over Dump. Dump hates Chigusa and Chigusa hates Dump.

That's how it should be. That's how it is. This is what it will always be.

I think it's also beautiful how the humiliation of how the loss comes into play, with Dump continually taunting the crowd as their precious hero gets her head shaved off.

This is everything, yet I still don't think this is either one of their career best, believe it or not.

I believe Chigusa has an actual fiver with Devil Masami just a few days before, and I'm covering what I believe is Dump's best match later. I believe it's with Yukari Omori, actually. (Thank you, Elliott, for submitting that!)

But what I do know is that wrestling is feeling, and this makes me feel, and this is certainly top 100, though this phrase might be overused by the end of the project.

God-damn it, I felt.

****1/4.
