Kinda annoying when I like someones glog enough to try and contact them only to be expected to jump through hoops including the info not being on their capsule only through their website which you have to guess exist, No email you must only use alternative com protocols and pgp encryption both of which I don't know how to properly use. At some point it just kills all motivation. My philosophy is that you should make it as easy as possible for people of all techical skill levels to communicate with you with whatever means they know and are familiar with.

@setecastronomy Im not super familiar with the IT world, but have noticed that similarly to mathematics academics, IT people tend to be smart-alec types who think understanding extremely overcomplicated processes and using obtuse in-field vocabulary jargon are signs of their high intelligence/technical savy. A form of elitist gatekeeping, the IT clubs version of a complicated handshake to show youre smart enough to be 'in' the group. Also maybe its partially a means of job security, since by making the internet so complicated its harder for people to get into network/web design thus eliminating potential competion. Thats just my opinion on it, im sure many will disagree which is okay! 路 2 years ago

@comatoast gemini://altesq.net/~lelkins/ is the straw that broke the camels back enough to write up this post but come across a lot of glogs like this over the month. Didn't want to point fingers at them specifically its more a common overarching issue with gemini and spaces that overtechical nerds/ FOSS activist inhabit. 路 2 years ago

I recently added an email to my home page and kept going back and forth over whether I should include PGP info since

A) I barely know how to use it myself and

B) It could dissuade people who know little to nothing about it from reaching out like you've mentioned.

So I'm glad this discussion is here. Knowing others think similarly makes the decision to remove PGP easier. 路 2 years ago

Why do I need to run SSL with it's overhead and waste time managing certs for a text only website like a documentation site, with no logins? It's beyond ludicrous. 路 2 years ago

This has become common place today in many areas of IT. IT has simply gone insane. No one follows the KISS principle anymore. It's all just a mountain of overly complex trash that does not solve the problem it was written for. Another example is "SSL all the world" where browsers wont connect to non SSL sites without jumping through hoops. 路 2 years ago
